The Route
We'll be starting in Cairo, Egypt on January the 16th, 2010 and finishing in Cape Town, South Africa on May the 15th. The whole journey is 11,704 kilometres of cycling. The route breaks down as follows.
Egypt
1000km
Start: Cairo on January 16th
Roads: 100% paved.
Sudan
1500km
Milestone: Khartoum on February 4th
Roads: 85 - 90% paved. Remaining 15% is corrugated rutted loose sand + hard packed gravel
Ethiopia
1800km
Milestone: Addis Ababa on February 21st
Roads: 80% paved, 25% of which is in rough condition. Remaining 20% is loose gravel, corrugation and dirt.
Kenya
900km
Milestone: Nairobi on March 12th
Roads: Northern Kenya is a lava rock desert, 500km of the toughest cycling of the trip. Remaining 400km is 90% paved.
Tanzania
1200km
Milestone: Iringa on March 25th
Roads: 50% paved. Mostly dirt road which can get muddy in rain / rocky with loose gravel.
Malawi
800km
Milestone: Lilongwe on April 6th
Roads: 100% paved, 60-70% is good quality, rest is potholes + degrading pavement.
Zambia
1100km
Milestone: Victoria Falls on April 16th
Roads: 100% paved, 40% of which is heavily potholed.
Botswana
1300km
Milestone: Maun on April 23rd
30% paved.
Roads: Remaining 70% is a mix of sand, hard-packed clay, dirt, loose gravel and corrugation.
Namibia
1500km
Milestone: Windhoek on April 29th
Roads: 100% paved.
South Africa
800km
Milestone: Cape Town on May 15th
Roads: 90% paved. 10% (100km) of very rough roads.
We will be camping every night, and accompanied by several support vehicles carrying food, water and our luggage!
